RECENT NEWS

A recent graduate of the South Carolina’s Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities, Caroline Harpring, was awarded the $500 Visual Arts Scholarship Award at the Guild’s June 6 meeting. Her major field of study at the Governor’s School was illustration with minor fields in ceramics and drawing. At the meeting, Harpring discussed several of her art works, including an oil on canvas titled It’s Not So Easy Anymore (R). She said “the painting focuses on the transition between childhood and adulthood and how, when we’re young, we’re optimistic and think we’re invincible, but as we grow older we face more mature things such as fear and negative influence. This piece also reflects the value in goodness and how I wish people could be more like children.”

Caroline’s other accomplishments include the 2016 President’s List & Dean’s List at the Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities, Second Place in the 2016 Augusta Chronicle Applause Magazine’s The Artist Cover Contest, and Artist of the Year at Fox Creek High School in 2015. Harpring’s first art award was given when she was an eighth grade student at Saint Mary on the Hill Catholic School in Augusta, Georgia. In pursuing of her love of drawing, design and storytelling, she will be attending Virginia Commonwealth University to obtain a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in illustration.
